I can relate; I combat the onslaught of ideas and then the resulting multipotentialite depression on almost a daily basis. I keep a journal full of your ideas, adding to it feverishly at times, and now sure what project to start first.
Sometimes the ideas have nothing to do with my brand, business or really anything at all I just think it’s something that will help fix a problem I am seeing.
I pretty shamelessly excel at most things I try- with the ability to pick up new skills quickly, and if your ears perk up and you are saying “Wow… that’s so me,” then it’s pretty darn likely that you’re a multipotentialite too. Never heard the term before? Brace yourself for some self-identity clarification!
A Quick multipotentialite definition!
A multipotentialite or multi-potentialite is defined as an individual with a wide range of abilities, skills, and potential, spanning across multiple industries.
What a dilemma!
As a multipotentialite, the sheer number of careers and routes we can take doesn’t help with our indecision, honestly, there is on one industry that provides the perfect multipotentialite career! It’s kind of sad, we can succeed in multiple avenues and get a large amount of joy and energy by exploring new topics and cultivating skills but can such a hard time doing the same thing over and over daily.
It’s no surprise that most entrepreneurs are, you guessed it, multipotentialites!
With multipotentialite superpowers comes responsibility
Mutlipotentialite burnout is real and by being mindful you of what struggle with, will make sure you don’t overdo it, saving you from burnout!
Difficulty making decisions:
Sometimes it’s quite hard to decide what direction to go, when you feel like they’re all equally plausible to bring success and enjoyment. This can lead to feeling frozen in fear of missing out on something exciting.
My recommendation: Take a deep breath Chica, next time you are having multipotentialite indecision, consult your goals and values, make sure both truly align with where you want to be.
Then ask yourself “What if they are both great?”, you will find your answer, if you have nothing to lose you will find that one appeals to you more than the other, go with your gut!
If you didn’t succeed at choosing one path over another, it’s likely as a multipotentialite that that you instead chose to just try to do EVERYTHING all at once. This can lead to serious time management issues, to say the least.
My recommendation: Well first, little reality check, you know you can’t do it all, time is a finite resource, so stop wasting it on things that won’t help further your business! (FYI that sentence was just as much for you as me, I kind of giggled to myself as I wrote, it cause honestly this is point is my arch enemy).
Ok, now that admonishment of sorts is out of the way, let’s get your on the right track. I spend a lot of my time on goal setting and time management, and the best thing I can say is prior planning prevent piss poor performance.
So sit down weekly and go over the big stuff you have to get done, the stuff you want to get done and then the extra ‘fun’ stuff; spread those tasks out over your week and make sure you realistically time block; then just be sure you get it done every night before you go to bed! If you need more help with this, I have afree short course on my planning process as a multipotentialite.
Feeling like a total failure:
Today’s society tends to put a lot of value and emphasis on the idea of task completion consistency- which can be a TON of pressure for the multipotentialites! Having so many burning ideas can often mean lots of unfinished projects at any given time, which in turn, can make you feel like you’re spinning your wheels.
My recommendation: Love yourself, you are how you are. That being said, completing tasks is super important to stick to something once you start it, so you don’t get a reputation as a flighty entrepreneur, that is never good. I really like the book How to Get Sh*t Done: Why Women Need to Stop Doing Everything so They Can Achieve Anything, it has helped me a lot with my mindset around planning my future! I recommend you get it and give it a read (or listen).
There! See you can do this, simply being aware of some of the obstacles that you may experience as a multipotentialite is half the battle of overcoming them! Now to move on to stuff we are good at.
Being A Multi-Passionate Entrepreneur Means You Can Crush It Like No Other!
Stop trying to fit into the box. The first step to starting to thrive is stepping outside of the box, trying so damn hard to fit in, you aren’t doing yourself or your audience any favors!
Face it- you look at the world differently than most, so the same routines and prescribed expectations that others feel comfortable with, will just never feel as good to you.
Find out what you want (not what you were told to want) and go do that; even if it looks a little wacky to everyone else. You’ve got this, and if you are a little hesitant here are a few steps to start with!
Get super comfy with change.
As someone who can experience success doing pretty much anything, and whose attention can focus entirely on one thing and then shift in an instant, it’s imperative that you become quite comfortable with change.
Here’s what you should know: change is not inherently a bad thing! We are often trained to think that it is, because society places such a high value on stability and follow-through. Once you’re able to let that idea go, you’ll be able to accept that change is a part of growth. And hey, you love growing, remember?
Connect to your purpose.
Once you know your main, core reasons for doing everything, it makes navigating life as a multipotentialite a heck of a lot easier.
Here’s what you should know: If you know that your core purpose on this planet is to help people, then it doesn’t matter at all if you go from being a massage therapist to a doctor for Doctors Without Borders, and then go on to be a world-famous yoga teacher.
If it’s all connected to your core purpose, helping people, then even if it all looks extremely different (and crazy) to the outside world, it will make perfect sense to you. And at the end of the day, that’s what really matters.
Figure out why you do what you do, and trust that all the dots will get connected along the way.
Take stock in your strengths.
Don’t play the humility card with me, we all have strengths even if we don’t want to acknowledge them sometimes. As a multi-passionate you have, in my opinion, the best strength the ability to be interested in and learn about many things.
Here’s what you should know: It’s time to stop playing coy with what you offer, list all your strengths out. Then use your creative brain to look at how these skills and natural strengths can help you in your life, and in all your vast pursuits.
Look at yourself with the mindset that you have so many diverse strengths, and that it’s a truly valuable tool! Being a multipotentialite can really rock, if you approach it with the right mindset!
Build yourself an umbrella brand.
This one’s for all the multipotentialite entrepreneurs out there, which, unsurprisingly, is most entrepreneurs. When you undoubtedly find yourself wanting to offer 4 different services or sell 12 different products or “D- all of the above” build yourself an umbrella brand.
As someone with a solid background in brand strategy and re-branding myself and my business over and over, I truly cannot stress this enough. The last thing you want to do is decide to pivot towards a new idea, and feel like you can’t figure out how to make it work for your brand, because you accidentally built something that didn’t allow any room for growth.
Here’s what you should know: Create a brand that encapsulates all the diverse things that you want to offer. This will make you feel less “all over the place” because everything you sell, or offer will fit into your plan and brand.
A great way to do this is to revisit your core purpose as an entrepreneur, so, answer the question “why do I do what I do” and then use that to connect all of the different things you want to offer to the world. Find the common theme and construct your umbrella brand from that.
To all of you multipotentialites out there, I hope this helped! Practice the tips above to truly thrive as a multipotentialite, and to turn your many diverse strengths into one amazing superpower!
