It's predicted that the average person nowadays will spend 5 years and 4 months on social media over the course of their lifetime, and that number is going to increase. That is a crazy and alarming statistic. Evidently a lot of people are spending time on their cellular devices. What are you doing on your cellular devices? Well, probably mess around with apps, and one of the best apps you've got is social media.
Social media apps:
In knowing that people are spending that much time on social media and time on their phones, your business needs to have a social media strategy and you need to know how to execute it well. It's so super important, just look at the statistics.
If you are one of those people that have social media but doesn't do much with it. Don’t feel bad, look at my job and my Instagram, it's brutal.
If you are one of those people there are on a couple of different options to make sure you are actually optimizing and capitalizing the amount of time people spend on you social media. To make sure your business can be one of those exciting brands and you can kill it on the web.
Tip #1: In-house staff
You can do in-house-staff, anytime in your business that you are going to have in house staff is probably going to be an expensive route. Not just in-house staff but actual employees that you pay a paycheck to, but it can also be a contractor like myself, or my agents.
So having in-house staff who knows very well what they are doing when it comes to social media marketing, to make sure your business is showing up properly is one option.
If you're going to do it in-house, it's a bandwidth of yourself and whoever you hired to come work in your business
Tip#2: software, aka a do-it-yourselfer.
With this option keep in mind you need to have a strategy, you have to make sure you are implementing it and optimizing it continuously because the algorithms on the various social media platforms are going to change literally, daily.
You have to make sure you are optimizing for that but you can go ahead with software and do it yourself, and be done with it.
Before you purchase any social media software you must first understand one thing; what is your ultimate marketing goal? What do you want the tools to primarily do? I continually see people hopping on groups asking "what do you think? What is the best tool?" And then you get a thousand comments, and you get it's "...it's Planoly, its Tailwind, it's the native app, it's Hootsuite" etc. It really does depend.
If you are doing it yourself, and just using a software and throwing stuff out there and creating and hoping it works, following all the new tips and tricks, and still working on it, part-time at best. Realize there is a bandwidth there as well.
Tip#: Hire an agency
You can hire an agency, like my agency thedigitalmarket.co. We literally come in and do it for you. If you have the budget, you can be at ease knowing someone knows how to do social media well.
And the last option is with the agency, there is a bandwidth issue there and you want to optimize for that when it comes to your business.
Tip#4: Hire a freelancer or consultant
For example, if you are going to hire me, singularly, I would be considered a freelancer or consultant, not necessarily an agency. So you can do that, just realize when you are going that route, the bandwidth that you get on all of those definitely varies.
If you are hiring a freelancer or consultant there is also a bandwidth I can guarantee you, you are not their only client, so they are only going to have so much time budgeted for yourself and your business.
It depends how much money you have to spend, it depends on how techy you are, it’s not a cookie cutter approach.
You should look at things when you're looking at a tool:
Here are 3 keys to consider when picking your tools:
1. If you are going to go buy 'Hubspot', you've probably got a pretty big budget versus if you go Hootsuite, which is $150/year; just realize that when you are figuring out your software.
2. Do you want to monitor conversations about your brand when thinking about a software that you are going to use for your social media? If you are going to monitor conversations about your brands, on the tool (ex: the native app), you are going to look at what people are saying and how they are saying it, and respond back to them.
Also know if you don't have time to monitor those conversations, you're going to want to hire someone, to look at those conversations to make sure you are responding back. Engagement is a huge key of the algorithms across all the social media platforms. Realize that you're going to need to actually talk back, otherwise your brand is going to look stagnant, you're going to see your engagement drop.
3. Do you want to understand how your audience reacts throughout changes?
A tool focusing on social media analytics, is potentially the most helpful. If you're an analytics person, like I am, you're going to want to see a return on investment when it comes to the time and money spent on your marketing. Make sure the tool, person, or agency that you pick is able to give you those analytics when you ask for them. Whether that be daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly.
You want to see how people are reacting and how your audience is growing. It allows you see what you can change or tweak to make sure you are showing up on social media the right way.
The 5 years that people spend on their phones on these apps, you want to be optimized to be right in front of them. So they can remember you when they want to buy something.
Most asked question: I want to just schedule out posts, can I just schedule posts? What is a cheap app that lets me just schedule them out?
Scheduling capabilities might be all you need, maybe you're going to do everything else and some way different. That's great, just realize if you are just going to schedule out posts your going to make your brand stagnant and it's going to cause an issue in the future.
This isn’t recommended because the purpose is to build your brand.
So, I hope these couple of tips helped you, the various options you can use, to either do it in house or pay someone to do it for your.
Consider the questions you should be asking and thinking when you’re going to pick an option that's going to work best for you.
